Air Scenting dogs are trained to locate any human scent in a specific area. They do not need a scent article and can work areas where other searchers have been. They will work with thier nose in the air or near the ground, depending on where the scent is. There are no limits on time or any weather restrictions. Air scenting dogs generally work off-lead, and are non-discriminating: they will locate all human indication in the area.
Tracking dogs are trained to locate and scent in the actual footprints of the victim and follow them step by step. They use a specific scent given off by a scent article. Weather conditions can affect the tracking, and in certain conditions the track may not last long. These dogs can work on-lead and in areas with no other searchers. Human discriminatory, a scent source is necessary.
Trailing dogs don't actually work step by step like the tracking dog, but will trail only a few feet from the tracks. They also need a scent article, and can work off-lead. Weather conditions can affect the tracking, and in certain conditions the track may not last long. Human discriminatory, a scent source is usually necessary. |
